Chicken Wing Defense

Why this drill

The best speed-up target in pickleball is your paddle-side shoulder — the chicken wing. Every player at 3.5+ gets attacked there weekly and almost nobody trains the answer: the compact backhand shield in front of the body.

Setup

Both players at their non-volley-zone lines, straight ahead. The attacker has balls in reach. Defender in a ready position with the paddle at chest height, backhand face slightly forward.

The drill

The attacker speeds up deliberately at the defender's body — hitting shoulder, hip, and midline, announced rounds of ten: one round at the paddle-side shoulder, one at the hip, one mixed. The defender blocks everything with the backhand face in front of the body, aiming soft into the kitchen. Score blocks that land unattackable. Swap roles each full cycle. The lesson that sticks: the backhand shield covers the whole body; turning to forehand mid-flight is how the wing gets you.

Backhand in front of the chest and elbow down — the shield beats the wing every time it's already there.
