Champion of the Kitchen
Why this drill
Winner-stays dinking for three: short, sharp kitchen battles with a line change every game. The champion defends under fatigue; the challenger arrives fresh and hungry — exactly the pressure gradient open play never quite provides.
Setup
Half court, straight ahead. Two players at the kitchen lines; the third waits at the sideline ready to step in.
The drill
Play dink-game points to 5, rally scoring — kitchen-only landing zone, speed-ups legal on balls above net height. Winner stays as champion; loser steps out; the waiting player steps in and serves a friendly dink feed to start. Track total games won across the block; crown whoever holds the most when time expires. The champion's real opponent is accumulation: game three at the line is played on different legs than game one, which is the point.
One thought to take on court
Defend your title with patience, not heroics — tired champions lose to their own speed-ups far more than to the challenger's.
