Midcourt Resets

Partner3.0–4.0+15 minResets & blocksTransition zone

Why this drill

The reset — taking pace off an attack and dropping the ball softly into the kitchen — is what separates players who survive the transition zone from players who donate it. This is deliberate practice for the shot nobody hits enough.

Setup

Attacker at the non-volley-zone line with a supply of balls; defender in the transition zone, around mid-court. Half court, straight ahead.

The drill

The attacker hits firm, controlled balls at the defender — at the body, at the feet, not away from them. The defender's only job is to reset: absorb the pace and float the ball into the kitchen so it cannot be attacked again. Sets of ten attacks; count successful resets. When the defender reaches six of ten, the attacker adds pace or aims lower. Swap roles every two sets. Resets that pop up above net height count as misses even if they land in.

Soft hands, low paddle, no backswing — let their pace die on your paddle face.
