Serve Corners

Why this drill

The serve is the only shot you control completely, and the only one you can practice completely alone. Deep, placed serving turns the one guaranteed touch per rally into a reliable edge.

Setup

A court and a bucket of balls. Lay two targets in the far service court — a towel in the deep-backhand corner and one at the deep-middle near the T, each about a pace inside the lines.

The drill

Serve ten at the backhand-corner target, ten at the T target, full legal motion at match pace. Score two for a towel hit, one for a ball landing in the deep third, zero for anything shorter — a fault costs one. Two rounds per diagonal, then move to the other side of the court and repeat, because the two service courts feel different and matches use both. Log the four scores; the deep-third count matters more than the towel hits.

One thought to take on court

Finish with your paddle swinging up and through toward the target — a deep serve comes from the follow-through, not from hitting harder.
