Why this drill

Placement practice needs targets, and the wall will hold as many as you can chalk. Working a numbered sequence of boxes turns aimless wall hitting into deliberate placement under a self-imposed order — the difference between hitting and aiming.

Setup

Chalk four boxes above the tape line, roughly a foot square, numbered 1 to 4: two just above the tape at the left and right, two a foot higher between them. Stand 7 to 8 feet back.

The drill

Rally softly against the wall and work the boxes in order: hit box 1, then keep the rally alive with neutral balls until you're set to attempt box 2, and so on. A full lap — all four boxes in order without losing the rally — scores a point; a dead rally restarts the current box, not the lap. Three laps is solid, six is strong. Then run the lap in reverse, which flips the forehand-backhand order of the angles. The neutral balls between attempts matter: they're the rally craft that holds a real point together while you wait for your ball.

One thought to take on court

Pick the box before the ball leaves the wall — aiming starts in the eyes, not the wrist.
