Split-Step Wall Rally
Why this drill
The split-step is the sport's most invisible skill — nobody claps for it, everybody who misses resets late because they skipped it. The wall's instant rebounds compress the hit-recover-split cycle so the habit gets grooved dozens of times a minute.
Setup
Any flat wall, tape line optional. Stand 9 to 10 feet back with room to move a step in each direction. One ball.
The drill
Rally against the wall at an easy pace with one non-negotiable: every time your ball strikes the wall, you land a small hop onto both feet — the split-step — before moving to the rebound. Say "split" out loud on each landing for the first two minutes; the voice keeps the feet honest. Rally to 25 with a split on every ball; any stroke hit flat-footed resets the count. Then repeat while alternating one step left and one step right between shots, splitting at each wall contact. The rhythm you're building — hit, recover, split, move — is the metronome under every good kitchen exchange.
One thought to take on court
Land as the ball leaves the wall — split on their hit, always, and the next ball never surprises you.
